OptaPro is delighted to support Columbia University on its Sports Management MBA program, providing data for students taking the university’s Analytics of Global Sport module.
OptaPro will provide its high-level performance data to students on the course, offering them a unique opportunity to directly address issues and apply analytical solutions using advanced Opta data from Major League Soccer.
OptaPro recognises the value that the academic community can bring to data-led analysis in elite sport, and we are delighted to be working with Columbia University across the Analytics of Global Sport module – a supervised research course within the program.
Innovative data-led analysis can often develop outside of the club environment. Given the intense pressure and time limitations professional club analysts face on a regular basis, this not a surprise nor is it a criticism. What it does imply is that there are learning opportunities to be had from outside of the club environment, and this is where academic institutions can contribute.
Having already worked with Columbia University in 2013 across a range of analytical research projects (you can read further blogs and analysis here), this new relationship will allow analytically minded students the opportunity to gain experience and applicable insight using Opta data.
The course will also present various real-life challenges common to the industry, which students will tackle through data-led analysis.
Angus McNab, VP Content Distribution and OptaPro lead in North America, said: “OptaPro highly values the insight, expertise and technical knowledge that the academic community can offer the professional sporting world, which means this partnership with the Columbia Sports Management program is a the perfect match.
“Students on this course will have a unique opportunity to use Opta data to ensure their analytical work is applicable to the professional industry.”
Vince Gennaro, Director of the Columbia Sports Management graduate program and a President of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), said: “Through this Alliance, OptaPro will provide data to use in our innovative Analytics of Global Sports course among other academic uses.
“Students will undertake projects to analyse player performance, evaluate roster strategies and place an economic value on players.”
